The quest for knowledge never ends
In Jan 1955 when the Academy was formally opened at Khadakwasla, Pune, the NDA library made its modest beginning in the Geography Laboratory. Today Vyas Library is situated on the left flank of the Sudan Block and was named after the renowned scholar, teacher, golfer and administrator, Mr T N Vyas who had been the Principal of NDA for fifteen years (1953-1968). Before being appointed as the Principal of NDA, he had been a distinguished House master at Doon School and had later been the Principal of Mayo College, Ajmer. Vyas Library, in conjunction with NTT building, resembles an anchor from aerial view.

The NDA helps the cadets to enter the most exciting career whether he joins Army, Navy or Air Force by combining military and leadership training with study for an undergraduate degree recognized by the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The cadets are offered three year under graduate courses leading to B.A., B.Sc. and B.Sc. Computer Science Degree. As a part of academic training, separate periods for visit to library are allocated for cadets. During the allotted periods for library, cadets visit Vyas Library, NDA for reference of books and access of on-line information.

The NDA has well stocked library, providing yeoman service as a repository of knowledge and information. The library subscribes 49 Indian Journals /Magazines including one foreign journal/magazine in addition to 12 Newspapers. The library has over eighty five thousand titles and has also access to about 97,000 e-books and 6000 e-journals through NLIST (National Library & Information Services for Scholar Content) as a part of INFLIBNET under UGC Consortium. Vyas Library resources are housed in to various stacks (each stack room spreading over 3000 sq ft in area) on the ground floor, first floor and basement. The Aryabahatta Hall and the Google Hall are situated in the ground floor. Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Hall and FM Sam Manekshaw Hall are situated on the first floor and the Rare Book Section is in the basement. Aryabahatta Hall has a rich collection of encyclopedias, year books, handbooks and service digest in addition to various text references on diverse topics. Google Hall provides access to on-line information through dedicated 30 thin clients for cadets and another three access points for the Officers. Kalam Hall is equipped with the collection of Science & Technology, Literature and Management and Manekshaw Hall has the collection of Social Science, World War I & II, Geography, Economics and Biographies. The ambience of the library attracts many a diehard reader to its fold.

The book issue/receipt of Vyas Library is fully automated through RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based biometric authentication. This has also helped in the automation of Library Stock verification. The availability of Open Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and e-book version of various international magazines related to Science, Sports and Arts made available in the NDA CAN have been helpful in bringing the vast library resources accessible to the users in their desktops. The sanctuary of the vast infrastructure of Vyas Library spread over three floors is also enhanced through Security cameras.

The Vyas Library building constructed more than five decades ago is in the process of extensive modernization of its infrastructure at an estimated cost of Rs. 285.72 lakhs. Once completed it will enhance the existing seating and stacking facility, modernize the technical facilities like additional internet terminals, digital corner, climatic control of reading rooms through cassette air conditioners, smoke detectors, generator based power back up and overall beautification and strengthening of the library infrastructure. NDA through the completion of this project will achieve not only the augmentation of the library facilities at par with any other leading national libraries but also enhancement of the architectural splendour of Vyas library building.
